Tattoo Removal Q & A

Aren’t tattoos permanent?

Yes, without any intervention, tattoos stay on your body forever. However, with a few laser tattoo removal sessions, you can reduce or fully eliminate any tattoo that didn’t hold your liking.

How does tattoo removal work?

PureMD offers tattoo removal services using the PicoSure laser. The device emits a high-intensity light that passes through the outer layer of your skin and is absorbed by your tattoo’s black or multicolored ink. The pressure from the laser breaks the ink into tiny particles that your body can easily eliminate.

You may not notice much of a difference after your first appointment. It takes an average of 10 sessions to fully remove a tattoo, with six to eight weeks between each appointment for healing. The amount of sessions you’ll need depends on the size and intensity of your ink.

What can I expect at my tattoo removal appointment?

At each appointment, your provider at PureMD covers your tattoo with a numbing cream to minimize the pain you’ll feel. The procedure may be uncomfortable, but PicoSure is significantly less painful than traditional tattoo removal. Your skin absorbs the numbing cream for about 15 minutes before your provider removes the cream to begin the laser treatment.

A member of the PureMD team moves the laser quickly across your skin. With each burst of light that it emits, you’ll feel a sensation that’s similar to hot oil dripping onto your skin. Each session lasts one to 10 minutes depending on the size of your tattoo.

At the end of your appointment, your PureMD provider cools the tattoo with an ice roller and covers it with an ointment and dressing. They give you instructions on how to keep the area clean and protect it from the sun.

What are the side effects of tattoo removal?

There are a few side effects from tattoo removal with PicoSure to be aware of before you commit to the treatment. Following your tattoo removal session, you might experience:

  • White patches
  • Swelling
  • Scabbing
  • Blisters
  • Light bleeding
  • Fading of the tattoo (this means it’s working!)

PicoSure is approved by the FDA and is very safe. If you have concerns, the team at PureMD answers your questions before your first session.

If you’re unsatisfied with the art on your body, call PureMD or schedule a tattoo removal appointment online today.
